Unmaintained after RH 6.1 release
-- proceed with caution
This one has been bugging us. mod_php3 as provided in the Red Hat
distributions through 6.0, lacks inherent support for connection to
a MySQL database [... GPL'd in mid-2000 for upcoming versions].
Without getting into a discussion of the
relative merits of the
Apache decision in going with DSO objects,
we simply applied the changes outlined in the
php3 FAQ to an existing SPEC file [and indeed added by RH later in
6.1], and had at it.

In RH 6.1, mod-php3 was obsoleted, and a standalone php3 was created.
In order to properly install it, however, a upgrade to RH 6.1 is needed
to get glibc 2.1 support in place (Probably not a good PR decision but the
glibc mantainers forced RH's hand here ...).
The SPEC file does not call out the
Glibc 2.1 dependency, but it is there -- Apache will die trying to
load the new PHP files without it.
Some people are not interested
in fully moving to 6.1, and so we back-ported enough
on a 6.0 platform to make the jump.

These may also require openLDAP files. In like fashion,
