In 1997, 1,376 adults received protective services through the Franklin County Department of Human Services' Adult Protective Services Unit, with two-thirds of the cases involving females (66.8%). Adults ages 60 and over represented 84.2% of service recipients. The number of adults receiving protective services increased by 183.1% since 1985. However, the number of adults receiving protective services in 1997 decreased 14.6% from 1996.
Protective services are provided to adults known or suspected to be suffering from abuse, neglect or exploitation to an extent that either life is endangered or physical harm, mental anguish or mental illness results or is likely to result. Services may include: casework, investigative, medical care, mental health care, legal services, fiscal management, home health care, homemaker, housing, guardianship and placement services.
