Total admissions to the Twin Valley Psychiatric System, Columbus Campus (TVPS)* have decreased by 76.3% since 1985, from 1,066 to 252 in 1997. Of the 1997 total, 26.5% were first-time admissions, 70.6% were readmissions and 2.8% were transfers from other hospitals. Since 1985, readmissions have outnumbered first-time admissions by at least 2 to 1 every year.
As the number of patients has decreased, the average length of hospital stay per patient discharged increased, from 104.8 days per patient in 1986 to 238.6 days in 1992. The sharp increase in average number of days per discharged patient from 1992 through 1994 is due in part to TVPS discharging several long term clients as part of its effort to downsize. According to TVPS, this is a result of the state legislature's efforts to increase care provided at the local level, thus allowing state hospitals to focus on more severe cases. By 1995, the majority of long-term clients had been discharged, causing the average number of patient days per discharged client to sharply decrease. In 1997, the average number of days a patient stayed in the hospital was 152.4.
In 1997, TVPS discharged 267 clients. Of these, 48 lived alone following discharge (18%), 54 were discharged to live with their families (20.2%) and 130 (48.7%) were discharged to supervised settings (i.e., prisons, nursing homes, group homes, other hospitals). The remainder were discharged to friends or had unknown arrangements.

Note: The higher average number of days patients spent in the hospital, during 1992 to 1994, is due in part to TVPS discharging several long-term clients. By 1995, the majority of long- term clients had been discharged, thus lowering the average number of patient days per discharged client.
