Median Monthly Housing Costs for Selected Groups in the Columbus MSA: 1991

Median monthly housing costs for householders in the Columbus MSA represented 20% of their incomes in 1991, according to the American Housing Survey. Renters spent considerably more of their monthly income (24%) than did owners (18%) on housing. 34% of renters spent more than 30% of their income on housing costs, compared to only 16% of owners. Even more contrasting, 9.4% of renters spent in excess of 70% of their incomes on housing, compared to only 3.4% of owners. The only other group exceeding the Columbus MSA median (20% of income) was blacks (22%).

Prior to 1984, the American Housing Survey used the standard metropolitan statistical area (SMSA) used in the 1970 census, which consisted only of Franklin, Pickaway and Delaware counties. The Columbus metropolitan statistical area (MSA) from 1984 to 1991 was defined as Franklin, Fairfield, Pickaway, Union, Licking, Madison and Delaware Counties.

Monthly housing costs include, if applicable: mortgages, contract rent, installment loans or contracts, real estate taxes, property insurance, homeowners association fees, cooperative or condominium fee, mobile home park fee, land rent, utilities and fuels, and garbage and trash collection.
