The 1982 Franklin County Mental Health Survey found that 8% of respondents indicated that drugs had a negative effect on their lives in the last year. In addition, 7.9% of respondents had an alcoholic drink every day. 7.5% reported that their families worried about their drinking, and 3.7% reported their spouses threatened to leave because of drinking. 3.9% of respondents indicated that they went for help about their drinking in the last year, while 7.1% reported seeking help at any time in their life.
These findings are roughly in line with the results of the National Institutes of Mental Health's Epidemiological Catchment Area Program, which reported substance abuse prevalence rates of 6% over six months and 16.4% over a lifetime for the adult population.
The needs assessment survey conducted by Nationwide Insurance Companies consisted of 1000 randomly selected Franklin County individuals surveyed by telephone.
