The 1987 National Health Interview Survey found that 76.2% of the national population had one or more physician contacts in the previous year. The average number of physician contacts for the year was 5.4 per person. The survey also found that 8.4% of the population had one or more hospital episodes in the previous year. The average length of stay for persons discharged from the hospital was 6.4 days.

The survey is of the civilian, non-institutionalized population. The above figures are underestimated because they do not include persons who have died or have been institutionalized and therefore did not participate in the survey.
