According to a 1985 survey conducted by the Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission (MORPC), the major problems for agencies providing specialized transportation include: lack of funds, availability of vehicles, drivers, maintenance, inability to reach patrons and lack of door-to-door transportation. Over half of the agencies reported some problem in providing transportation. Similarly, the biggest problems faced by users of specialized transportation include: lack of transportation for shopping and medical appointments, lack of wheelchair services, cost and lack of reliable door-to-door 24-hour transportation. MORPC surveyed 137 area human services agencies that either provided or used specialized transportation services. Specialized transportation is used by persons for transportation to work, school, medical appointments and social or recreational events.
A separate survey of 42 social services agencies, conducted by the Columbus Area Leadership Program, found that the most common method of providing transportation was utilizing volunteer services (47% of agencies). One of the most serious problems identified was obtaining specialized transportation services for persons with difficulty transportating themselves between the building and vehicle, and for individuals confined to a wheelchair who need adapted vehicles.
