Of the 524,600 occupied housing units in the Columbus MSA in 1991, 63.6% were single-unit detached structures, according to the American Housing Survey. Another 13.9% were in single-unit attached structures. Multi-unit structures and mobile homes/trailers accounted for the remaining 22.5% of occupied housing units. 7.8% were in 2-4 unit structures, 4.5% in 5-9 unit structures, 3.8% in 10-19 unit structures, 2.3% in 20-49 units structures, and 1.2% were in 50+ unit structures. The survey estimates that there were 15,400 mobile home/trailers in the Columbus MSA, or 2.9% of total occupied units. Within the MSA, there were variations in the breakdowns of occupied housing units for different geographic sub-areas. For example, single-unit detached structures accounted for 49.0% of total occupied units in the City of Columbus, compared to 73.0% of occupied units in the remainder of Franklin County (i.e. the suburbs).

Prior to 1984, the American Housing Survey used the standard metropolitan statistical area (SMSA) used in the 1970 census, which consisted of Franklin, Pickaway and Delaware counties. The Columbus metropolitan statistical area (MSA) from 1984 to 1991 was defined as Franklin, Fairfield, Pickaway, Union, Licking, Madison and Delaware counties.

A one-unit structure, such as a house, is classified as detached if it has open space on all four sides even though it has an adjoining shed or garage. A one-unit structure is attached if it has one or more walls extending from ground to roof that divide it from other adjoining structures and does not share a furnace or boiler with adjoining structures. Townhouses and rowhouses are examples of one-unit structures.
