Householders in the Columbus Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) are generally satisfied with the overall quality of their neighborhoods, according to the American Housing Survey in 1987. On a scale of 1 (worst) to 10 (best), 68.2% of all householders rated their neighborhoods an 8, 9 or 10 (best) overall, and only 5.3% rated their neighborhoods a 1, 2 or 3 (worst). For specific sub-populations, however, variation in satisfaction exists. As the chart above illustrates, blacks and Hispanics were less satisfied with their neighborhoods than were all householders in the Columbus MSA in general. 56.2% of blacks and 48.4% of Hispanics rated their neighborhoods and 8, 9 or 10 (best), while 8.4% and 12.9% rated neighborhoods a 1, 2 or 3 (worst), respectively. This lower level of satisfaction reflects the higher incidence of neighborhood problems reported by blacks and Hispanics. 47.7% of blacks and 46.9% of Hispanics reported a neighborhood problem in 1987, compared to 44.6% of all Columbus MSA householders. Other people was the problem most frequently reported; 18.8% of black householders and 21.9% of Hispanic householders.
