The American Housing Survey estimated that 84,600 households in Franklin County moved between 1986 and 1987. The chart above illustrates the relative frequency of reasons reported by recent movers for the choice of their present neighborhoods. Convenience to jobs, characteristics of the house and the look and design of the neighborhood were the most frequently cited reasons by recent movers in the City of Columbus and the remainder of Franklin County. The quality of schools was cited as a reason nearly four times as often for recent movers in the remainder of Franklin County (24.25 of recent movers) as it was for movers in Columbus (only 5.8%). For movers in Columbus, the availability of other public services and of public transit were relatively more frequently cited.
Recent movers are defined as householders who moved into their present units during the 12 months prior to the interview. The "other" reasons category includes examples such as wanting a change in climate, neighborhood crime problems, racial or ethnic composition of the neighborhood, etc. More than one reason may be cited by a householder.
