The American Housing Survey estimated that 84,600 households ( or 23.2% of all householders ) in Franklin County had moved between 1986 and 1987. The chart above illustrates the relative frequency of reasons reported by recent movers in Columbus and the remainder of Franklin County for leaving their previous units. The size and quality of housing units, employment related reasons, and family related reasons were the most frequently reported reasons in both geographic areas. Establishing own household and lower rent/maintance costs were reasons more frequently cited by householders in Columbus than for those in the remainder of Franklin County. Changes intenure (from owning to renting or renting to owning) were cited more than twice as often for householders in the remainder of Franklin County (16.8% of recent movers) than for householders in Columbus (7.2%).
Recent movers are defined as householders who moved into their present units during the 12 months prior to the interview. Displacement includes both public and private displacements. Private displacements include situations in which a private owner wants to use the housing unit for some other purpose. Government displacement means the respondent was forced to leave by the government (local, state or federal). Family status changes include marriage, widowing, divorce, separation and other fmaily personal related reasons. The "other" category includes examples such as wanting a change in climate, neighborhood crime problems, racial or ethnic composition of the neighborhood, etc. More than one reason may be cited by a householder.
