According to the Community Shelter Board, 9,423 homeless people used shelters in Franklin County in 1997. Of these people, 45.9% were single males, 11.9% were single females and 42.2% were persons in families. Of the 9,423 homeless people, 2,242 (26.2%) were children.
Since 1994, there has been a 10.2% increase in the number of people using shelters. There has been a 15.5% increase in the number of persons in families using shelters, while there has been a dramatic 45.8% and 44.5% increase respectively in the number of children age 5-11 and 12-17 using shelters.
