As the chart above indicates, high school seniors in Franklin County report using alcohol more than any other drug. Regular use (i.e., monthly or more often) of alcohol has declined recently, from 50.7% in 1988 to 46.8% in 1991 to 44.1% in 1994.

In all grades, self-reported regular use of cigarettes was higher in 1994 than in 1991. For twelfth graders, regular use of cigarettes increased to 31.2% in 1994 from 26.7% in 1991. Self-reported regular use of marijuana was also higher in all grades in 1994 than in 1991. This reflects national trends. Regular use of marijuana by twelfth graders more than doubled in 1994 to 24.4% from 11.1% in 1991.

The percentage of seniors using hallucinogens has increased since 1988. In 1994, 5.7% of high school seniors reported regular use of hallucinogens. The percent of seniors reporting using the other types of drugs (stimulants, inhalants, depressants and cocaine) decreased from 1988 to 1991, but increased between 1991 and 1994.

The Franklin County Educational Council sponsored need assessment surveys that were administered in the fall of 1988, 1991 and 1994. The 1994 assessment is based on the surveys of 64,925 sixth through twelfth graders from Franklin County's 16 public school districts and from 34 non-public schools. Students who were not in attendance on the survey date are not included.
