Number of Households by Income Type in Franklin County

As the chart above indicates, Franklin County households receive income from a variety of sources. In 1989, 311,102 households received an average of $36,173 from wages and salaries. Social Security income was the next most frequent type of income received in 1989, 75,806 households receiving an average of $7,506. This was followed by 55,628 receiving retirement income ($9,447 average), 40,395 receiving nonfarm self-employment income ($17,975 average), and 28,363 receiving public assistance income ($3,749 average). Another 2,443 received an average of $5,509 from farm self-employed income. Households may receive income from more than one type of source.

Wage and salary income includes total earnings from wages, salary, pay from armed forces, commissions, tips, piece-rate payments, and cash bonuses. Nonfarm self-employed income includes net income received from one's own nonfarm business, professional enterprise or partnership. Social Security includes Social Security pensions, survivor's benefits, permanent disability insurance payments, and railroad retirement insurance checks. Public assistance includes: supplemental security income payments to low income persons who are aged, blind or disabled; aid to families with dependent children; and general assistance. The value of in-kind benefits from food stamps, public housing subsidies, medical care, employer contributions for persons, etc. is not included as income.
