Occupation of Employed Persons 16 Years and Over in Franklin County

The occupations of persons in Franklin County reflect the county's services and trade-oriented economy. The most common occupation reported by employed persons in 1989 was administrative support (i.e., secretarial, clerical, other support). 100,105 persons in 1989, or 20.2% of the total, worked in administrative support jobs. Professional specialty occupations were the next most common (15.8%), followed by executive, administrative, and managerial (14.7%), sales (12.6%) and service occupations (10.1%). Relatively fewer persons were employed in goods production-related occupations such as precision production, craft and repair (7.8% of total), machine operation, assembly and inspection (4.6%), and technicians and related support (4.4%).

Between 1979 and 1989 the greatest growth was in executive, administrative and managerial (22,303 new jobs), professional specialty (20,948 new jobs), and sales occupations (20,094 new jobs). Occupations experiencing the greatest loss of jobs since 1989 were machine operators and assemblers (4,825 jobs lost) and precision production, craft and repair occupations (2,154 jobs lost). These trends indicate that Franklin County is continuing to move towards a more services and trade-oriented economy.
