Employed Persons by Class of Worker in Franklin County

There were 496,524 employed persons in Franklin County in 1989. As the chart above illustrates, the vast majority (78.0%) worked in private organizations for wages and salaries. Government workers (federal, state and local) were the next largest class of worker in 1989 (17.0%), followed by the self-employed (4.8%) and unpaid family workers (0.2%). Private wage and salary workers have increased over the last decade from 74.8% of total employed persons in 1979 to 78.0% in 1989, while government workers decreased from 20.8% to 17.0%.

Class of worker is defined by the type of ownership of the employing organization. Private wage and salary workers include employees of a private company, business, or non-profit organization. These employees work for wages, salary, commissions or payment in kind. Self-employed workers are persons who work for profit or fees in their own unincorporated business, profession or trade, or who operate a farm. Unpaid family workers are persons who work without pay on a farm or in a business operated by a relative.
