There were 236,766 children less than 18 years old in Franklin County in 1990. The majority of children (66.5%) lived in married family households in 1990. The next largest number of children lived in single female-headed households (21.0%), followed by children living with other relatives (6.7%), and children living in single male-headed households (3.3%).
Since 1980, the largest increase has been children living in single female- and male-headed households, from 49,850 in 1980 to 57,504 in 1990 (a 14.5% increase). In 1980, 21.1% of all children lived in single female- and male-headed households, compared to 24.3% of all children in 1990. Conversely, the percentage of children living in married couple families has decreased, from 70.6% in 1980 to 66.5% of all children in 1990.
In 1990, 2.5% of children had "other" living arrangements. These included: children who were heads of households (0.1% of total), children living with non-relatives (1.8%), and children living in group quarters (0.6%).
