Married Couple & Single-Headed Households with Related Children by Race in Franklin County

There were 38,150 single-headed families with related children in Franklin County in 1990, a 40.4% increase from the 27,180 in 1980. Single-headed households represented 29.9% of total households with children in Franklin County in 1990, up from 23.4% in 1980. Single-headed households with children increased for all racial categories except "Other" between 1980 and 1990. Of all racial groups, Asian and Pacific Islanders had the lowest percentage of single-headed households with children (11.7%), while Black households with children had the highest (60.9%). Of the 38,150 single-headed households with children in 1990, 32,357 (or 84.8%) were female-headed.

A single-headed household with related children is a male or female householder with related children in the household and no spouse present. Related children include own children and all other persons under 18 years of age in the household, regardless of marital status, who are related to the householder, except the spouse of the householder. Foster children are not included since they are not related to the householder.
