Since 1980, the fastest growing living arrangement category was "elderly living alone," increasing by 26.9% from 23,066 in 1980 to 29,272 in 1990. Elderly living in families increased by 23.6% over the same period, while elderly in group quarters and other living arrangements increased by 7.1%. Although comparable data for 1990 is not yet available, 25.4% of the elderly living alone in 1980 were also in poverty (5,791 individuals).
Particularly difficult for the elderly is living without a telephone. In 1980, approximately 2% of the elderly in Franklin County (or 1,343 individuals) were without telephones.
