As the graph above illustrates, the labor force participation rate of women with children has increased dramatically in recent decades. The participation rate of women with children under 6 years of age has increased from 22.2% in 1960 to 62.0% in 1990. The participation rate of women with children 6-17 years of age has similarly increased, from 52.2% in 1970 to 77.0% in 1990. Combined, 69.6% of women with children in Franklin County were in the labor force in 1990. This represents 122,102 Franklin County women.
Children in homes (i.e., families or subfamilies) with all parents in the labor force is the norm in Franklin County. In 1990, 65.1% of children in families had both parents (or all parents present) in the labor force. Of children less than 6 years of age, 58.8% lived in families with all parents in the labor force, while 68.9% of children 6-17 years of age lived in such families.
The labor force participation rate is defined as the percentage of persons over 16 years of age either employed or unemployed but actively seeking employment.
