Return to the PIE Home PageThere were 378,723 households in Franklin County in 1990. As the chart above illustrates, almost half of all households were married-couple families. Over the last decade, however, married-couple households have declined relative to other household types, from 54.3% of all households in 1980 to 48.2% in 1990. At the same time non-family households have increased, from 31.9% of all households in 1980 to 36.1% in 1990. Single-headed families with children also increased their share, from 8.4% of all households in 1980 to 10.1% in 1990.
While the chart indicates that 63.9% of all households in 1990 were family-households, these households accounted for 78.8% of all persons. Another 18.6% of the population lived in non-family households, and 2.6% lived in group quarters. This represents a small decrease in the percentage of persons in families, down from 82.0% of all persons in 1980.
A household is defined as a person or persons occupying a housing unit. A family is two or more persons who are related by birth, marriage or adoption, and who live together as one household. Children are persons under the age of 18.
