The general trend in Franklin County continues to be towards a better educated population. Over the last two decades the percentage of the population with at least a high school diploma (or equivalency) increased from 61.1% in 1970 to 81.0% in 1990. The percentage with a college diploma or better also increased, from 14.5% in 1970 to 26.6% in 1990.

As the percentage of more-educated persons increased, the percentage with less education decreased. Over the period 1970-1990 the percentage of the 25 years or older population with less than a high school education decreased from 39.0% to 19.0%. This represented 113,495 Franklin County residents in 1990.

Within Franklin County, over the same period, suburban populations (i.e., outside of Columbus) were better educated than those in the city of Columbus. In 1990, 85.1% of Franklin County's suburban population 25 years or older had completed at least a high school education, compared to 78.7% in Columbus. This gap is shrinking, however, as the rate of improvement in school completed by Columbus residents has outpaced the rate of improvement of suburban residents.
