In 1990, there were 524,535 households in the Columbus MSA, an increase of 16.7% over the 449,648 households in 1980. Over the same period the number of people in the Columbus MSA increased by 10.7%. A faster rate of household growth than population growth indicates a declining average household size, with smaller households becoming the norm.
The number of households in Franklin County increased by 17.2% over the decade; from 323,150 in 1980 to 378,723 in 1990. Households in the City of Columbus increased by 18.2% over the same period.
The Columbus MSA is comprised of Delaware, Fairfield, Franklin, Licking, Madision, Pickaway and Union Counties. A household is defined as all the persons who occupy a housing unit.
