One factor contributing to the rising number of households in Franklin County is the increase in female-headed households. In 1990 there were 123,093 female-headed households in Franklin County (or 32.5% of total households). Since 1970, the number of female-headed households in Franklin County has more than doubled (109.2% increase), while total households (all household types) in Franklin County increased by only 46.0%. Female-headed households with children have increased even more dramatically, by 123.0% since 1970.
A household is defined as all persons living in a housing unit. Female-headed households include family and non-family households, with or without children, that are headed by a female. Female-headed households with related children are family households headed by a female with no husband present, and her with own and other related children. Children are persons under the age of 18.
